PARTICLES+WAVES Cornelia Thomsen

“I search for the simple and direct appreciation of the basics of color and line in my stripe paintings. Lines that would typically create shapes and movement maintain their simplicity and directness, and build a curtain of stripes in juxtaposition with each other. The dominating blue, white, and ochre build an association with the sea. Since the Renaissance and the achievement of the central perspective, paintings can open up a spatial depth on a two dimensional surface. My paintings do not allow the viewer to look deeper than what the illusion of a three-dimensional curtain allows; the succession of fully continuous stripes in my paintings focus on the experience of color, contrast, and rhythm.”
